North Norfolk Railway

The North Norfolk Railway is known as the Poppy Line, a 5 and half mile train ride from Sheringham along the coast to Weybourne and inland to Holt. A fantastic steam engine experience with lovely scenic views to admire.

What to expect

The poppy line offers a unique experience of steam engines, vintage carriages, stopping at three Victorian stations. You can catch the train from either Sheringham or Holt. Once tickets have been purchased you can stand on the platform and get up close to the train. Close you eyes and can smell and hear the steam train getting ready for it’s trip. Something which I miss with the new modern trains we have today.

On board, you are seated in a vintage carriage which takes you back to 1887 when the track was built, not a lot has changed since.

Next Stop

Tickets are valid for the entire day so make the most of it. You can stop off at Holt, Sheringham or Weybourne station.

Holt Station

Holt station is located approximately 1 mile away from Holt centre. They do offer a return bus trip into town a small fee, where you can look around the market town, enjoying many independent shops and cafes. You can easily spend a good few hours here. Please note the trip runs between 25th July & 30th August.

If, you don’t fancy the trip into town you can look around the station. Explore the small museum, miniature railway, model railway and shop, then sit down and enjoy some refreshments.

Holt station

Weybourne station is the middle station between Holt and Sheringham. The carefully restored station is situated about one mile south of Weybourne village, a small and friendly location offering a couple of shops, a pub and couple of hotels. You can walk to the village via a path which runs from the station. The beach here is shingled and located about another half mile north of the village centre. If you’ve got the time it’s well worth the stroll and offers some lovely scenic views.

The station itself offers a bookshop, refreshments, shop and a model railway.

Weybourne Station

Sheringham is a popular holiday destination and the station is located in the town centre. Originally a fishing village the arrival of the station made sheringham a popular place to visit. The directors helped with the development of the village which lead to many homes and hotels being built. Many people like to still visit Sheringham to visit the shops and cafes, enjoying the coastal & inland walks. A golf course is also located here if you fancy a few holes.

If you wish to learn about the fishing history visit the Mo Sheringham Museum & Henry Ramey Upcher Lifeboat Museum.

Sheringham Station doesn’t offer much as everything you require is within the town.

Train types can vary from diesel powered or steam powered. Please check time tables here before visiting; Station

Would love to do this. Have done others similar like the Severn valley railway and the Polar Express in Shropshire, which the grandchildren obviously loved.

Can you suggest any caravan touring sites nearby please?
