Why not try something a little different or continue doing something you enjoy on your break!

Over the past few years, stand up paddle boarding (SUP), has been largely increasing with people enjoying the water in a unique way. Gliding on the water surface you use what looks like a surfboard and a paddle to propel yourself along the water. This activity is a great test of balance and can be enjoyed by the whole family and friends.

With many variations in board types and styles, it opens the door for many uses. With the likes of family fun at the beach, yoga, surfing, racing, fitness training or paddling adventures. It doesn’t stop there with many paddlers enjoying the sport with their dogs.

A few companies are now promoting stand up paddle boarding in Norfolk and offering lessons and the hiring of equipment. Making it a new and exiting activity day out for any age.

Where Did Paddle Boarding Originate From?

It may appear to be a relatively new sport but in fact it’s been around for centuries. Originating from Hawaii, the form of stand up paddling was used to travel and fish. While in more recent times, it gained exposure in 2004 when water man Laird Hamilton used this technique when training for big wave surfing. Up and till then the concept of stand up paddle boarding was mainly used in the world of big wave surfing, to propel a rider on to waves, faster than conventional means. It soon came apparent that the sport appealed to many other people, the one main limiting factor was the boards themselves. With the boards being produced from epoxy composite, made them cumbersome and fragile, not appealing to many!

These SUP adventures in Norfolk sound amazing. I have only just tried paddle boarding for the first time at Christmas, with no training, and as an older person in my 50’s it probably wasn’t the best idea. But I had great fun anyway. I think your your Super SUP Day package would be perfect for the beginner like me. Getting professional training and learning the proper techniques can really make your experience even more enjoyable. I can say that actually standing up on the boards is harder than it looks, there are specific techniques (especially if your balance is not what it used to be) that I learned after the fact. I would really recommend people of all ages give this ago through a package like the Super SUP Day where you will get the training you need, it is a lot of fun. PS: My dog wouldn’t get on the SUP, he prefers to kayak. Thank you for this post, I really thoroughly enjoyed it as I live on a Lake and enjoy watersports. Would love to do some SUPPING in Norfolk.

Being able to take a professional lesson before tackling the paddle board would be great. I know that this is a fast growing sport here in the US. My FIL lives in a quiet cove on a lake and I’ve seen his neighbor with the stand-up paddle board, and was quite impressed. The dog would go with her, and when he would get tired of it, he’d jump into the water and swim to the dock. She never missed a beat the entire time; that’s great balance there.

I believe I’ll have to give it a try when the weather warms up here. It would be nice if someone around my area offered lessons; I’ll have to check into it further.

  3. I haven’t tried paddle boarding but sounds really fun. I love to do any sport in water as I just feel so free when I am in a lake, river or the sea.
Thanks for this article and it might help me to do this fun activity one day.
